Popis: In Reply.— Ms Bickel's remarks concerning problems with a batch of Aplisol are appreciated and deserve comment. We fully share her concern about the faulty Aplisol with its attendant potential for misdiagnoses and unnecessary treatment. Her concern gives us an opportunity to elaborate further on a substantial problem that has not been adequately reported in the scientific literature. The Aplisol problem first surfaced in 1982 when the CDC received reports from medical providers of increased rates of false-positive tuberculin reactions with certain lots of Aplisol used for Mantoux PPD skin tests. We investigated several clusters of false-positive tuberculin reactions associated with some lots of Aplisol and reported both our own and the CDC's findings in the August and October editions of the New York State Department of Health's Disease Control Bulletin . 1,2 In one specific investigation of a cluster of ten Aplisol PPD conversions, no evidence of a tuberculosis source
