Popis: | A series of 1%C-Fe melts was processed under various partial pressures of carbon monoxide in a 99% AW3 crucible at 1580 ± 10°C. The bath aluminum and oxygen contents were found to be a nonlinear function of treatment pressure asymptotic to 0.10%. Al and 5 ppm O. Since the experimentally determined values for oxygen removal were in good agreement with those predicted by thermodynamic calculations, it was concluded that melt-refractory interactions limit the minimum obtainable oxygen. A hypothesis is presented explaining the nature of the melt-refractory interactions which result in a constant bath oxygen content at pressures less than 100 torr and a constant aluminum content at pressures less than 10 torr. |
