Often, for the young Nigerian, the greater the number of foreign dance steps he can display, the greater is his claim to being "civilized," although he might lack all knowledge of Nigerian music. Because of this trend toward westernization, the Federation governments are making active attempts to support the traditional culture of the people. One such attempt is the annual Arts Festival organized by the Western State. Other States have sponsored similar festivals; however, the Western State has been unique in its encouragement of the youth's participation in the event. As Brigadier Adeyinka Adebayo has said, "They are to immortalize our traditions."
