By means of X-ray diffraction and infra-red spectroscopy the preparation conditions and the structural properties of the new spinel series LiNi0.5Mn1.5−xTixO4 and LiNi0.5−yMgyMn1.5O4 are investigated. The cation distribution and the 1:3 octahedral order between divalent and tetravalent cations both can be compared with those of Li[Ni0.5Mn1.5]O4: for all compositions Li+ is the only cation that occupies tetrahedral lattice sites. Infra-red absorption spectra reveal that the long-range 1:3 octahedral order is maintained in LiNi0.5−yMgyMn1.5O4, whereas long-range order transforms into short-range order for the titanium-containing spinels. For sufficiently high Mn4+ contents a magneto-crystalline clustering of the Mn4+-cations is found in LiNi0.5Mn1.5−xTixO4. |
