Popis: The essay aims to emphasize the fact that many readers have no access to Joyce’s original text but have to rely on translations, a particular problem for a work that may be called untranslatable, as in some ways all literature is. What impression, in concrete details, would readers get if they look at Ulysses in French, Italian, German, Dutch, Danish, or Swedish, and what would change? Naturally, the main concerns are ambiguities, overtones, plays on words, allusions, quotations, and matters of style but also such humble problems as accuracy or the network of motifs.
