Conventional light microscopy of Indiaink-injected or other tissue samples has long established in humans and various animals, including the rat, that the hypophyseal portal system originates in the median eminence and terminates in the pars distalis [1–4]. Recent scanning electron microscopy of vascular casts (injection replica SEM method) has clearly demonstrated this long portal route in the monkey, rat, and some other animals, as well as the short route connecting the infundibular process and pars distalis [5–13]. This chapter introduces our injection replica SEM findings on the hypophyseal vascular plexuses and portal vessels of newborn, pubescent, adult, and aged rats [6,12,13]. |
