Popis: | The scarcity of natural resources for the manufacturing of cement and the depletion of natural sand deposits led to the demand for looking into alternatives for cement and sand. The objective of the present research work is to develop a sustainable alkali-activated concrete by replacing the cement with alkali activated slag and partially replacing the sand with Used Foundry Sand (20% by weight—fixed replacement). The properties like strength in compression, fractured tensile strength and elastic modulus of control mix and alkali-activated slag concrete with and without Used Foundry Sand were compared. The 3, 7 and 28 days average compressive strength of ambient cured alkali-activated slag concrete without Used Foundry Sand were 11.59%, 2.88 and 2.47% respectively higher than heat cured alkali-activated slag concrete without Used Foundry Sand. Similarly, heat cured alkali activated slag concrete with Used Foundry Sand were 18.88%, 16.10 and 4.74% respectively higher than ambient cured alkali activated slag concrete with Used Foundry Sand. The fractured tensile strength and elastic modulus have followed a similar trend of compressive strength. Adopting a limited percentage of used foundry sand and full replacement of cement with slag will protect the environment in terms of reduced CO2 emissions. The results showed that slag and Used Foundry Sand can be effectively utilized in producing alkali activated concrete. |
