Popis: The question of which cropping system is superior in the context of the farming systems of the West African Guinea savannah has not been answered yet. A methodological framework for the assessment of cropping systems is provided. Relevant indicators required in order to evaluate the performance of the systems, namely their productivity, stability and sustainability, are determined. These parameters are computed from experimental data which are based on a five-year crop sequence trial. Subsequently, the experimental data are used to conduct an ex-ante analysis from a farming systems perspective of 18 farm households. Results indicate that a portfolio of the three cropping systems seems to be optimal. However, the actual combination of cropping systems varies according to the relative resource endowment and risk preferences of the farm households.
