Popis: Discussion of press partisanship in Britain has tended to focus on high-profile cases of relatively recent vintage. But while the contemporary electoral antics involving The Sun and other papers are reasonably well known, less attention has been devoted to the role of comparable titles in the formative period when Britain emerged as a modern democratic state. This chapter consequently provides insight into the nature of newspaper editorializing during the interwar years, specifically the seven general elections held during an era when titles like the Mail, Express and Herald enjoyed proselytizing on behalf of favored politicians. Although far from the sole manifestation of any title’s electoral loyalties, newspaper endorsements offer an invaluable way of surveying the intensity (or not) of press partisanship, particularly in the two decades when the print media first began to promote their political opinions to their truly mass readerships.
