Summary The West of Shetlands represents an underexplored area and remains at the frontier of exploration, principally due to uncertainties in the hydrocarbon charge and seismic imaging. In recent years, efforts were made to address the quality of data within the area in addition to increasing offset and record length to take into account renewed commercial interest in the former acoustic basement. The Westray 3D multiclient survey released in 2018 allows us to address major imaging challenges that must be overcome to reduce exploration risks. Interpreting this new seismic data set provided insight into details of enigmatic discoveries and have later been integrated into petroleum system modeling to better understand the complex charge history of the Paleocene and fractured basement plays. In addition, the new imaging allows a better delineation of Triassic and Jurassic intervals that have been tested as a potential analogue for the Strathmore- and Solan-type discoveries in the Westray survey area. This seismic interpretation and petroleum system modeling study has taken a major step towards completing our understanding of the individual petroleum systems in the various tectonics settings of the Westray area and, ultimately, advances our knowledge of the greater Faroe-Shetland Basin. |
