Popis: Previous studies have found that early postnatal experience (including type of birth and maternal separation) have long-term effects on behaviour. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the experience of maternal separation and stress at birth had an impact on the individual’s personality and behaviour in adulthood. A total of 51 participants (10 male and 41 female) from the general population completed the standardised Personality Trait Scale from the Five-Factor Model. Background variables were also assessed including type of birth ((long/short) labour, caesarean, forceps, normal), drugs used during labour, complications and separation after birth (using retrospective self reports). Individuals who were separated at birth were less self-disciplined and found it more difficult to start tasks. The effect is even stronger for individuals who experienced a stressful birth and were then separated from their mother. These preliminary results indicate that very early experience may have long-term and lasting effects on the personality of the baby and into adulthood. It is possible that there is an important distinction between the lasting effects of acute and chronic stress during the birth and early postnatal period.
