Popis: C HLOROTHIAZIDE influences the renal transport mechanisms involved in reabsorption of electrolyte and excretion of free water apparently through its action on both the proximal and distal segments of the renal tubule [l-3]. The prolonged oral administration of chlorothiazide has been found to be associated with an elevation in the serum uric acid concentration without a significant rise in the serum urea nitrogen concentration [4]. The present study was undertaken in an attempt to define further the renal mechanisms by which the serum uric acid concentration is modified by chlorothiazide. It was hoped that a study of the effect of chlorothiazide on the renal clearance of uric acid might also yield information concerning the still poorly understood mechanisms for the renal excretion of uric acid [5]. The results indicate that, under different conditions, chlorothiazide may either reduce or increase uric acid excretion by the kidney. The possible significance of these findings in relation to the renal mechanisms involved in uric acid excretion is discussed.
