The metastable aluminate lye can be considered as a system of reversible equilibria and its conductivity as a function of total aluminium content (at constant total sodium ion concentration and temperature) can be explained in terms of the formation of monomeric, dimeric and hexameric aluminate ions along with associates between tetrahydroxo aluminate and hydroxide ions and between dialuminate and hydroxide ions, respectively. Higher total concentration and lower temperature are more favourable for the existence of the hydrogen bridged aluminate—hydroxide complexes. Two series of measurements are presented: 1. (i) 6.0 M total concentration, 25.0 °C 2. (ii) 4.0 M total concentration, 65.0 °C. The two series mimic the two most important methods of bayerite production and allow us to draw some conclusions on different qualities of the precipitated alumina. |
