Optical gain, gain saturation, and waveguiding in group III‐nitride heterostructures

Popis: The optical gain and waveguiding properties of nitride heterostructures are essential prerequisites for device optimisation. We address the mechanism of optical gain using direct measurements of optical gain spectra and demonstrate the impact of polarisation fields. Limits to the optical gain are shown to be imposed by carrier escape and by gain saturation. Control of guided modes by waveguiding nitride structures differs from other materials due to their birefringence. Careful optimisation is therefore needed in order to obtain good far-field properties. (© 2003 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
