Popis:	This contribution discusses German archaeological excavations in Italy in 1942, the fate of the library of the Deutsches Archaologisches Institut Rom during and immediately after the Second World War, and postwar perceptions of German scholarship. The heuristic value of the concept of ‘academic diplomacy’ is discussed in conjunction with the role and influence of individual actors in the process of the return to Italy of four German scholarly libraries in Rome and Florence in the same period.
