Popis: From an analytical perspective rooted both in intellectual history and in the sociology of intellectuals, this article examines how the process of re-peripherialization in the countries of the former Yugoslavia during the 1980s and the 1990s influenced the production of social sciences in the region in two ways: by triggering deep transformations in the conditions of scientific production and by posing new analytical problems to local authors. With a special focus on Serbian and Croatian sociology, we will analyze some discussions around the concept of transition. The central hypothesis is that the difficult course of events during the first years after the fall of Communism in both countries allowed for local social scientists to take a position of critical distance towards some of the universalist implications of that concept. Thus we will see that if the concept of transition indeed gained importance and was able to set agendas of discussion during that time, its reception was not a passive but a strongly polemic and productive process.
