Popis: | During heteroepitaxial growth, a transition from planar to three-dimensional morphology occurs spontaneously, leading to the formation, self-assembly, and coarsening of nanoscale islands. This dynamic process is carried out via surface diffusion driven primarily by strain relaxation and chemical intermixing/segregation. Strong coupling of morphological and compositional evolution during this process leads to a rather complex dynamics, which has not been well-understood. In the present work, we develop a three-dimensional finite element model, which is capable of fully describing the complex dynamics arising from the coupling between morphological and compositional evolutions. Using this model, we systematically perform three-dimensional simulations to understand the effects of the system parameters on the growth dynamics of epitaxial alloy thin films. Our simulation results produce and explain many of the interesting phenomena observed experimentally and paint a rather complete picture for the overall dyn... |
