Popis:	The paper investigates economies of scope and economies of scale using individual banks' data in Japan. The paper attempts to inquire into whether cost complementarity is observed between lending activities and other activities (largely, securities business and fee business). Special attention is paid to the fact that Japanese banks are allowed to hold shares of other corporations, and the effect of accrued capital gains (or losses) is considered. The paper builds a model for a bank that takes account of both lending and intercorporate shareholding and estimates the parameter values to examine scope and scale economies.
