Assessing biological distance among populations using craniometric variables has a long history in anthropological research. This chapter provides a brief summary of some of the pivotal contributions of early anthropologists and reviews the development of the discipline over the last century. An in-depth description of data collection protocols is offered, which includes an overview of available instrumentation, landmarks, and associated measurements. A discussion of heritability of cranial traits is provided with a summary of common analytical techniques and a review of seminal human variation studies that have influenced the estimation of biological distance. |
