Popis: | The study examines the effect of the siren sounded on Israel's Remembrance Day (April 25, 2023). It does so by sampling respondents during the two hours before and two hours after the siren and measuring levels of solidarity with different groups in Israeli society. I expect the siren to operate as a unifying ritual that will increase solidarity, specifically among Israeli Jews. Since January 2023, Israel is gripped by mass civic protests aimed to block the government-proposed judicial overhaul. This has resulted in widespread polarization between different subgroups (religious vs. secular, rightwing vs. leftwing). This polarization also impacted the relation to Remembrance Day, which is usually perceived as a day of national unity. One controversy concerns the legitimacy of government ministers' attending remembrance ceremonies. The study examines whether the effect of the siren - the epitome of Remembrance Day - may have changed, weakening its supposed unifying effect and potentially producing an opposite effect. |
