In adult and last larval stage locusts, muscle responses to short wind puffs (8–1000 ms) were recorded. For adult animals the characteristic flight motor output can be released in both pterothoracic segments. For the last larval stage in which these muscles are already present, activity can also be elicited during such wind stimuli, but the flight-typical antagonism is not obvious. However, several other parameters describing the muscle activity are similar for both stages. This argues for a preimaginal completion of the neuronal circuitry which underlies the flight start of adult locusts. |
