The Bayfield County Forest is one of 29 county forests in Wisconsin. Wisconsin law provides the framework for this unique forest management program, including forest plan requirements. Wisconsin counties with lands entered in the program manage nearly 2.4 million acres (0.97 million hectares) of public forests. Bayfield County is responsible for the planning and sustainable management of a 169,394-acre (68,553 hectare) forest. The 2006–2020 Bayfield County Forest Comprehensive Land Use Plan was developed over a 2-year time frame. This chapter briefly entails the plan development process, organization of the plan, some outcomes of implementation, lessons learned, and challenges that lie ahead. The land-use plan and the county’s management of it through a public forum have fared very well under the scrutiny of dual certification by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and Forest Stewardship Council. It is an adaptive plan for a property that is actively managed with a robust timber and recreation program. |
