Reactions to arthropod bites and stings are a common problem as arthropods are widely distributed and many have life cycles which require them to feed from other animals, including humans. Others have biting or stinging devices which they use for defense. Many more noxious arthropods are found in warmer climates. We will concentrate only on those organisms found in temperate western Europe; most of these animals are also found in the continental USA. Although every individual is at risk, those living in close living conditions, lacking simple protective measures (screens, for example) and practicing poor hygiene are at greatest risk. |
