The authors explore the effects of spatial and locational cueing upon the aggtegated resultsof cognitive mapping data. Using four experimental data sets they demonstrate that locational cueingintroduces random error into the analysis and that spatial cueing increases the relative and absoluteaccuracy of spatial products (extemal representations of spatial knowledge). These effects are con-sistent regardless of whether individual or place cognition is assessed. As such, location and spatialcueing compromise both construct and convergent validity, and the integrity of the conclusions fromprevious studies on cognitive mapping are brought into question. It is suggested that a multidatacollection, multidata analysis approach should be adopted to highlight and compensate for thesemethodological weaknesses'I Introduction
