Concerns about the decline in computer science enrollments have appeared not only in computing publications but also in the mass media. Reasons for diminished interest in technology-oriented careers are many and complex. Proposed solutions for expanding the population of scientists and engineers are few and largely untested. One solution, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, is the involvement of undergraduates in a research experience with the hope that the experience will reinforce their career decision and encourage them to go on to graduate study. This paper describes an undegraduate research experience conducted at The American University, the nature of the students' involvement, and he affects of their experiences on their career goals. |
