Popis: | The authors explored the antibacterial activity of gentamicin conjugated gold nanoparticles against Escherichia coli bacteria by using the disk diffusion method. Gold nanoparticles were prepared by the reduction of tetrachloroauric acid with sodium citrate. Experiments were performed with relatively lower and higher doses of gentamicin, gold nanoparticles, and gentamicin conjugated gold nanoparticles. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of the bacterial colonies with and without treatment were taken. Results show that gentamicin used alone in a lower range of doses did not cause any growth inhibition, but when used in conjugation with gold nanoparticles, clear inhibition zones were visible. The ratios of inhibition areas of gold nanoparticles with gentamicin to only gentamicin were more in case of bigger sized gold nanoparticles. AFM images of the bacterial colonies also showed that gentamicin conjugated gold nanoparticles were more effective than other groups in inhibiting bacterial growth. |
