This paper presents a summary of recent efforts to extend engineering methodology to predict transitional behavior for three-dimensional hypersonic flows. Our previous work in predicting transition onset using a calibrated PDE formulation has shown promise for analyzing a wide range of axisymmetric hypersonic flows. Similarly, the transition to turbulence process utilizing a transport equation for intermittency has also proven effective in predicting the transition length and blending behavior. The present work expands upon these transition prediction methodologies by presenting model enhancements for Reynolds number effects, nose bluntness, and three-dimensional flows and represents work in progress towards a more “universally effective” model for hypersonic flow transition. |
