This chapter addresses the important question of who benefits from the new technology and the changing nature of work. It analyzes the applications of new technology and shifts in the organization of work that speed up the concentration of wealth into the hands of a tiny select few while exploiting working people and/or destroying the climate. It also talks about how new technology can allow working people to benefit through increased resources, more time for recreation, and non-labor activities while providing sustainable practices that allow human life to survive and adapt to growing shifts in the climate. The chapter highlights that echnological change holds important implications for workers and the labor movement. Conversations narrow the range of social vision to the question of how to ensure that the citizens of the future simply get enough to survive. |
