The proliferation of high-bit-rate wireless services such as multimedia and highspeed Internet access is driving the development of next-generation wireless communication systems to support much higher data rates than the current second-generation (2G) and the emerging third-generation (3G) systems. In this article, we present a new technique for a point-to-multipoint network (such as the forward link in a cellular system), which we refer to as spread space-spectrum multiple access (SSSMA). This scheme uses all the degrees of freedom in the frequency, time, and space dimensions for the transmission of each signal. |
