Popis: The esophagus may require surgical intervention as a result of various traumatic and structural pathologies. The vast majority of esophagectomies are performed in the presence of cancer. However, prophylactic esophagectomy is also performed in the presence of conditions such as Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal varices, achalasia, and corrosive esophagitis. In selected cases where it is known to be premalignant, such as Barrett’s esophagus, prophylactic esophagectomy prevents cancer development.
