C3.P1C3.P2Flood myths are ubiquitous. They are found, for instance, in Greek, Egyptian, and Toltec mythologies. The Sumerian/Babylonian and biblical myths and their similarities are discussed here. Flood myths are associated closely with creation myths and exist even in cultures from areas where floods are nonexistent. What is the psychosocial importance of the flood in our cultural dreams? Flood myths speak to the idea of the destruction of the world to make possible a new beginning. They speak to the fact that our world is imperfect and in need of a universal cleansing, leading to a new creation. Flood myths are both tragic and hopeful. They are at once tales of destruction and renewal, death and rebirth. |
