Summary In order to reduce the possibilities of personnel injuries, damages to machines and non-productive times of manufacturing facilities, the gripping force in lathe chucks has to be monitored. This paper describes a new strategy for detecting and monitoring a decrease of the gripping force caused by an increase of the chuck friction. The monitoring is based on a measurement of the hydraulic feed pressure during the clamping process. For this indirect measurement the gripping jaws have to be preloaded by additional compression springs in the chuck body. The structure of a computer based monitoring system is introduced which initiates predictive maintenance for lathe chucks in standard applications. |
