Popis: Four methods of treatment of hyperthyroidism are discussed. Anti-thyroid drugs are the treatment preferred for those under the age of 60 in the absence of complications. Thyroidectomy is indicated in the treatment failures of anti-thyroid drugs and in the presence of large goitres, especially with obstructive symptoms. Radio-active iodine therapy is the treatment of choice above the age of 60 and in the presence of complications, especially thyrotoxic heart disease. It is also the preferred treatment for recurrences after thyroidectomy. Sympathetic blockers are essential in thyrotoxic crisis and can be used as an auxiliary form of treatment combined with the other methods. The importance of a life-long follow-up is emphasized especially where thyroidectomy has been the method of choice as this is not generally realized.
