Popis: The distribution of phosphomonoesterase activity in the tail tissue of larvae of Xenopus laevis has been determined in the pH-range 2.8–11.0. Two pH optima, at pH 3.9 and 8.9, were found. The optimum at pH 8.9 as well as the strong activation by Mg++. at this pH are characteristic for phosphomonoesterase I. By studying the effects of Mg++ and F− and determining the MICHAELIS constants, evidence was obtained for the presence of two more enzymes, acting at pH 3.9 and 5 respectively; they are assumed to correspond to the phosphomonoesterases III and II, respectively. These results are compared with those obtained by BELLINI on larval tail tissue of Bufo vulgaris.
