Popis: Many workers have studied the antagonistic action of these ions. Perhaps the most work has been done by the muscle physiologists who have been interested in the behavior of heart or skeletal muscle when one ion or another is added or removed. Such study is doubtless important, but it has yielded little or no information concerning the fundamental nature of the antagonism. With the development of the science of colloid chemistry, it has been commonly held that the salts of protoplasm exert effects on the living colloid similar to those which they produce on inanimate colloids. Some have suggested that calcium exerts a precipitating action on the colloids of the cell, and that this effect is antagonized by sodium and potassium ions. This is, indeed, what one might be led to expect if the micellae of the protoplasmic colloid were negatively charged. Direct studies of the effect of various cations on the colloidal
