Popis: | A sampling of one hundred cases of conversion reactions from those reported between 1885 and 1937 in the hysteria literature were examined. Left-sided symptoms significantly outnumbered right-sided symptoms by a 2:1 ratio. Although this ratio existed for both male (n = 32) and female (n = 68) samples, it was significant only for the female hysterics. Given the crossings of the sensory-motor pathways, the greater proportion of left-sided hysterical symptoms differentially implicates the right hemisphere. This is consistent with recent experimental reports suggesting that the right hemisphere has a greater role than the left in mediating emotional experience. Explanations for the preponderance of left-side symptoms as preserving dominant hand functions are refuted. |
