Popis: After the “divorce” of Czechoslovakia, the assumption that the common history would set approximately the same pace and direction in the development of social work has not materialised. It has rather developed in two different ways as comparisons between Czech and Slovak versions of social work will show. The chapter focuses on social work in Slovakia from 1993 to the present through highlighting several milestones in their historical context and offering the authors’ reflections on their significance in three areas: the emergence of social work in the non-profit/civic sector; the place social work and social services found in public administration, in education and in social education; and how social work became an academic discipline under Slovak conditions. Last but not least, the authors critically reflect on the transformation of the social sphere and social services in Slovakia as the main topic of this period, while also analysing the controversial moments of this process. At the end, future perspectives of social work and social services will be considered.
