Popis: The decrease in visual acuity is a common symptom of many ophthalmologic and neuro-ophthalmologic diseases. The origin of the disease may be located anywhere along the entire visual pathway, from the optic nerves backward to the visual cortex. In order to guide the diagnosis and thus avoiding unnecessary complementary diagnostic tests, careful medical history and complete ocular examination must be performed. Diseases presenting decreased visual acuity must be identified and assessed urgently by ophthalmologists and/or neurologists because visual and life prognosis of some of them are directly related to the rapidity with which appropriate treatment is instituted.
