A comparison of observed and calculated values indicates that the observed distribution coefficients at concentrations between 0.03 and 2 molar concentrations of 1 : 1 electrolytes like LiCl, NaCl, KCl, as well as all 2 : 2 electrolytes have values which suggest that the electrolytes taken up by the aqueous cavities at these concentrations are predominantly in the form of paired ions (not ion-pairs), or other neutral combinations. This must apply in an even greater degree to 2 : 2 electrolytes, whose paired ions are calculated to have a 20 times lower distribution coefficient. The value agrees well with the observation for substances like MgSO 4 The model of spherical cavities is used largely for convenience. More or less the same conditions may be expected to arise with cylindrical pores of a rather smaller diameter. |
