Two trial pits were carried out at the site during the archaeological evaluation (Phase 2). The trial pits revealed that modern landscaping (presumably associated with the construction of the school play ground or possible post II World War site clearance) had horizontally truncated most of the archaeological sequence. The earliest and only archaeology observed at the base of the test pits dates to the 19th century and comprises a possible quarry pit and brick wall. No natural brickearth was observed, though the underlying sandy gravels were encountered in both locations, at c16.15 OD (TP9) and c16.24m OD (TP10). No archaeology pre-dating the 19th century survived with the test-pits. |
