Eight barley cultivars (Hordeum vulgare L. ssp. vulgare) and wild barley (H. vulgare L. ssp. sponlaneum) from 21 different geographical locations were tested for variants in pollen specific isozymes. Variants were found in pollen specific acid phosphatase (ACP), aminopeptidase (AMP), and esterase (EST), whereas no variation could be detected in pollen specific peroxidases (APX) or in a putative pollen specific modification of malate dehydrogenase (MDH-2). A part of the variation open to selection in the gametophytic phase of the barley life cycle may thus be attributable to pollen specific loci. In addition, variation was detected in an anther specific peroxidase (APX-3) and in previously unde-scribcd isozymes of glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) and NADH dehydrogenase (NDH), which were expressed in pollen, anthers and pistils only. |
