Hypertension (HTN) is a common medical disorder that an anesthesiologist can face during the perioperative period. The etiology of the disease can be complex, and causes of primary hypertension are not yet fully understood. It is important to understand the many different aspects of hypertension to adequately manage the patient. Although generally managed by primary care providers such as internists, family practitioners, and nurse practitioners, severe perioperative HTN may result in excess surgical bleeding, myocardial ischemia and/or infarction, congestive heart failure (CHF), and acute pulmonary edema (APE). Therefore, it is very vital for the anesthesiology team to have a thorough knowledge and plan to take care of these patients. |
