Hexaoxacyclooctadecane induced interfacial engineering to achieve dendrite-free Zn ion batteries

Popis: s Dendrite growth and by-products in aqueous Zn ion batteries have been impeded their rapid development as energy storage devices. Here we utilized a concentric-ring like additive, hexaoxacyclooctadecane (18-crown-6, 18C6), into typical ZnSO4 electrolytes to hook the Zn ion on surface by confinement effects during the electrochemical process. Combining experimental characterization and theoretical calculations, the dynamics were systematically investigated to offer a deceleration Zn deposition, in which a low charge transfer barrier and a high desolvation barrier were harvested simultaneously with 18C6. It regulated the solventized structure of Zn ions and held the steady hydrophobic interface during the electrochemistry process. The by-products yield was extremely low. Zn symmetric cells be cycled over 2400 h at 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2. These studies provided an effective strategy to reach the dendrite-free and high-density Zn energy storage devices.
