In 1993, flooding at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, located at the bottom third of the SantaMargarita River Watershed near Oceanside, CA, caused unprecedented damage to government property andtransferred an extraordinary amount of sediment to the Base. The flooding highlighted the need for acomprehensive hydrologic, hydraulic, and sediment transport study of the Santa Margarita River, which runsthrough the Base. This paper addresses the procedures used in estimating sediment yields at specific locationswithin the watershed and its subsequent use for determining upstream boundary conditions for the sedimenttransport model. GIS tools were also utilized to determine and analyze watershed characteristics such as slope, soil type, and vegetative cover for gross erosion determination. Then, taking into consideration several regionalrelationships, the gross erosion was translated to sediment yields. The results were used for confirmation of thedeveloped inflowing sediment rating curves, which provided input to a sediment transport model. The end resultof the first phase of this study was a set of hydrologic, hydraulic and sediment transport models to address waterresource and sedimentation issues on the Santa Margarita River. |
