Popis: The MMT adaptive secondary mirror, as part of the MMT AO system, was the first of its kind when it was deployed in 2002. The 336 element device used voice coil actuation to deform the optical surface at speeds of 500 Hz. The MMT Adaptive optics exoPlanet characterization System (MAPS) is a program intended to update this system for high spectral resolution characterization of exoplanets. Advances in electronics since the MMT ASM implementation have motivated us to design an upgrade to this system which will work at higher speed and with more complex control algorithms. The design goals for the refurbishment are to develop a system that uses less power, is more compact, and is as cost effective as possible. We present the design of the MAPS adaptive secondary electronics and describe the status of the prototyping and fabrication.
