Popis:	Density profile modification and generation of density cavitons in laser-produced plasmas due to ponderomotive force is discussed. Earlier important theoretical work in this field is reviewed. Experimental evidences of self consistent electric field and profile modification are given in a chronological sequence. Recent experimental results demonstrating caviton formation in long pulsed laser plasmas from solid targets, are presented.
