Using a test facility similar to one used by other investigators who reported observation of doubly charged negative ions of iodine and other elements the negative ion spectrum of iodine was examined for evidence of I−2. A spectrum similar to one observed by others with a mass peak at 63.5 was obtained. The presence of such a peak has previously been attributed to I−2, however, application of radioactive tracer techniques show that this peak in our apparatus was not due to iodine, but to some impurity. |
