The characteristics of the two-fold collision peaks in the energy spectrum of ions reflected from the face of a single crystal in a specified direction were calculated in earlier papers [1–3]. Later [4] a model based on scattering by two neighboring atoms was used in order to show that, as a result of the mutual screening of these atoms, both minimum and maximum angles of reflection should exist. However, the two-atom scattering model is imprecise. For glancing incidence on the face of a single crystal in a plane passing through a direction of close packing, the ion suffers a number of successive collisions with series of atoms forming chains in the crystal lattice. The parameters of each successive collision are determined by those of all the preceding collisions. A direct calculation of collisions of this kind for chains consisting of immovable atoms gives an unexpected result [5]. The energy spectrum of the ions reflected in a specific direction as a result of five or ten collisions also contains the peaks of “single” and “double” collisions, the single ones constituting the result of a single strong and a large number of weak collisions, while the double ones consist of two successive relatively strong and a number of weak collisions. |
