ALMQUIST and Mecchi (1942) were the first to study the lysine requirement of chicks. Their experimental diets contained 20 percent protein. The sources of protein used in the diets were zein, edestin, and mixtures of edestin and casein, and edestin and zein. Except for lysine, all deficiencies of essential amino acids in the diets were remedied by appropriate supplementation with pure compounds. The results of the investigation showed that the lysine requirement of chicks is approximately 0.9 percent of the diet. Grau, Kratzer and Asmundson (1946) reported that the lysine requirement of chicks is 0.96 percent of the diet. Sesame meal was used as the source of protein in the experimental diet, since except for lysine it is adequate in all essential amino acids. Grau (1948) concluded that the lysine requirement is correlated with the protein content of the diet. The lysine requirements at protein levels of 5, 10, 20, … |
