How do elite discourses about refugees impact refugees’ political integration and intentions on return? In this study, we answer this question through an original survey experiment conducted with 3,992 Syrian refugees living in Turkey and Germany. We find low political interest and support for political participation among Syrian refugees in general. Our experimental results indicate that the anti refugee elite discourse weakens these already low levels of political interest and support for political participation. However, contrary to our expectations, our findings suggest that the anti-refugee elite discourse does not significantly impact refugees’ intentions on return. We conclude that the hostile political environment in host countries undermines refugees’ political integration. |
